LANDSCAPES OF THE AMAZON
1st Day, Sep./01 – BELÉM
Arrival, welcome and transfer to the hotel. Afternoon activities include city tour of the
main sights to see in Belém: Museu Paraense Emílio Goeldi (visitation): The Emílio Goeldi Museum is a research institution seated in the Amazon region and internationally renowned for its scientific production in the fields of Botany, Zoology, Archeology, Anthropology and Earth Sciences; Basílica de N. S. de Nazaré (visitation): The Basilica of Our Lady of Nazareth is where Brazil’s largest religious procession, the “Círio of Our Lady of Nazareth", takes place; Da Paz Theater: this theater is a landmark for the rubber
cycle in the Amazon and was opened in 1878; Estação das Docas (visitation): This is an entertainment and leisure complex; Ver-O-Pêso Market (visitation): an open-air market complex of goods in general; Cidade Velha District: this area concentrates most of the city’s historical, artistic and cultural heritage; Forte do Castelo (Castle Fort): the site where Belém was founded; Museu de Arte Sacra (Sacred Art Museum): with a collection of 520 piece
s dating back to the 18th and 19th centuries; Streets and Squares.
2nd Day, Sep./02 – BELÉM / MARJÓ ISLAND (Fazenda do Carmo)Transfer from the hotel to the port, departure at 6:30a.m. for Camará, Marajó Island – the largest fluviomarine archipelago in the world. Upon arrival at the Camará pier, transfer to Fazenda Nossa Senhora do Carmo, and accommodation. This sets the beginning of the everyday contact with the ‘Marajoara’ m
an. At 12 noon regional lunch is served. Free time for resting while enjoying the cozy atmosphere of the ranch’s main house. At 3p.m., horseback riding through the natural fields of the ranch. In
the evening, tourists go out to watch alligators and other night animals of the Marajó Island fauna. After that, dinner is served at the ranch.
3rd Day Sep.
/03 – MARAJÓ ISLANDOur day starts at 5:30a.m., with departure at daybreak for a beautiful canoe tour and bird-watching: parrots, toucans, monkeys, amongst other birds – your tour will be awarded with a great natural spectacle. Return to
the ranch for breakfast. Morning is free for bathing in the pond or the river. Lunch is served at noon. After lunch, transfer to the city of Soure, the gateway to the island, featuring its fields of typical flora and fauna, the large buffalo ranches, and the untouched beaches. Lodging. At 3p.m., city tour of Soure and its enchanting sights: downtown, the buffalo leather tanning facility, the old mansions that withstand the time, and the riverfront. The rest of the day is free to enjoy the hotel’s leisure infrastructure.
4th Day Sep/ 04 – MARAJÓ ISLAND
After breakfast, departure for a visit of Vila do Pesqueiro, a fishermen’s community with white sa
nd beaches and fea
turing the diversified culture of the Marajó region. This outing is chance to see how the community lives and their relationship with fishing and extractivism by getting to know their daily habits such as the harve
sting of seeds of andiroba, which is a fast-growing tree, reaching up to 30 meters, with thick and sour bark. This species has a great economic value due to the abundance and oil content of its seeds and for its timber. Also, tourists listen to the many stories told by the fishermen and of the legends and myths of the Amazon. Lunch is served at the community. Bathing at the Pesqueiro beach is optional. At 2p.m., transfer to Fazenda São Jerônimo, a typical Marajoara ranch with a privilege
d location – a deserted exotic beach, kilometers of untouched forest and hundreds of animals, creeks and mangroves. At the ranch, depending on the tide, outing can be done either by canoe in the creeks or by ecological trails in the forest. Tourists will have the opportunity to see a mangrove forest featuring trees of over 25 meters in height. Birds and fowls such as ibis, heron
s, hawks can be watched along the way. Return to the hotel late in the afternoon.
5th Day Sep./05 – MARAJÓ ISLAND / BELÉM / SANTARÉM (Alter do Chão)After breakfast, transfer to the port and voyage back to Belém. After arriving in Belém, transfer to the hotel. In the
afternoon, river tour along the coast of Belém – this outing provides the opportunity to see the contrast between the city’s bucolic riverfront and the growing modernity in the background. The
tour takes one hour and a half and features such sights as: the Fishermen’s Square, the Ver-o-Peso Complex, the Castle Fort, the Churches of Sé, Saint Alexander and Our Lady of Carmo; the tour ends at the Princesa Isabel square. On the way back, you get a beautiful view of the well-lit Estação das Docas and the Ver-o-Rio Project further ahead. Presentation of the "Lendas Amazônicas" (Amazon Legends), specialized tour guide, typical dance and live music. Next, a tour of the city to catc
h a glimpse of its nightlife. Transfer to the airport. Flight to Santarém city (Alter do Chão). After arriving, transfer to the hotel.
6th Day Sep/06 – ALTER DO CHÃOAfter breakfast, we will cross the Lago Verde (Green Lake) on motorized indigenous canoes and disembark at the main beach of Alter do Chão (the Love Island). There, we will start our hiking to the Serra Piroca, the region’s main hill. The savannah-type vegetation is present along the way to the point where we wil
l take a steep, but relatively short (approximately 1 hour), hike to the top of the hill, where you can get a spectacular 360-degree view of the Tapajós River, of Lago Verde and its bays, the
Amazon River to the north, and Alter do Chão to the south. This site reflects the great scenic beauty of the Tapajós National Forest. As we return, we will take a boat again to one of the bays of Lago Verde (Igapó do Macaco), where part of the jungle remains under water between the months of March and August. The landscape is beautiful and you can watch birds and fish. From September through
February the landscape in this wetland is completely different, with creeks and springs of crystalline water, making it an ideal place for bathing. Lunch will be served at a restaurant at the Floresta Encantada (Enchanted Forest). After lunch, you can relax in a hammock, enjoying the shade of a tree. After that, we will go into another forest (Floresta Encantada), which is also flooded but is thicker and has medium-sized trees. This is a place of absolute silence of unique harmony. Late in the afte
rnoon, our voyage will takes us on a tour of the great Tapajós River as far as the Ponta do Muretá to enjoy the sunset along with the typical gray and pink dolphins (called ‘botos’).
7th Day Sep/07 – ALTER DO CHÃOVisit to the Comunidade Maguari, located inside of the Tapajós National Forest. Access to the area can be either by off-roads or by speedboat to the beaches of Pindobal or Aramanai. The local communit
y is part of the sustainable forest management support project of the Amazon. This outing offers the opportunity for the visitors to learn about the use of the natural resources by the river-dwelling, traditional communities. The community lives on the production of manioc flour, beans and rice for subsistence
. The artisanal “ecological hide” is their new source of income. The locals demonstrate the entire process to transform latex into ecologically sound products. Beautiful, diverse craft pieces are produced such as bags, backpacks and accessories. After that, we will proceed to the Comunidade de Jamaraqua (some 3 kilometers away), which is one of the smallest communities in the Tapajós National Forest. Return to the hotel.
8th Day Sep./08 – ALTER DO CHÃOFree day to walk around the Alter do Chão village or enjoy the beach. In the evening, we will do the Piracaia (an ancient indigenous ritual of eating fish by the beach on full moon nights). Return to the hotel.
9th Day Sept./09 – ALTER DO CHÃO / DESTINATIONBreakfast. Transfer to the airport and completion of our services.
